Rosemont Family Day 2019

We finished our year with another fabulous Rosemont Family Day! DJ Sudie greeted smiling faces with festive dance tunes. Families enjoyed making banners with Kristen Barnhart and adding to colorful weavings with Lesli Robertson, a powerful performance by the Rosemont Dance Company, a fun family tour, a challenging scavenger hunt, and delicious ice cream. It is always such a treat to meet the families of GROW students. :)

Rosemont Family Day 2018

This year's Rosemont Family Day was super fun!  We had a scavenger hunt, two artist-led activities, a live DJ, and cool treats from Steel City Pops. We also enjoyed a wonderful performance by the Rosemont Dance Companies, which included current GROW students as well as a GROW graduate.  Thanks to everyone who joined us!

At artist Mylan Nguyen's table, visitors made personal talismans on small porcelain discs that they could wear on a chain or string necklace.

Tea Ceremony Tour, Part One

Hello GROW parents, teachers, and students!  We're almost halfway through the year, and what a fun year it's been so far.

During our first tour, we explored the special exhibition Tom Sachs: Tea Ceremony.

Kabuto by Tom Sachs

In his sculpture, Tom Sachs reimagines the traditional Japanese kabuto.

The above picture shows a traditional Japanese kabuto.  A kabuto is a type of helmet that was worn by Japanese samurai warriors.  Sachs reimagines the traditional kabuto by making one with common, everyday materials.  

Tom Sachs often uses a process called bricolage. Bricolage means to construct something using any materials that are available.  For example, the decoration on top of Sachs's helmet is a feather duster - a tool that is usually used for cleaning and is not typically associated with art.

Not only did Sachs reimagine the kabuto by using different materials, but he also used his helmet in a different way: for protection as he cuts wood.

Next we looked at Lobster by Tom Sachs.  Do you recognize everyday materials in this sculpture?

The same craftsmen who made the Japanese samurai long swords also made objects like the lobster below.  Once again, Tom Sach's uses the bricolage technique to reimagine the bronze lobster sculpture.
